Welcome to Saint-Petersburg!

In the Soviet Union St.-Petersburg was renamed. It became Leningrad, which is "the city of Lenin". The most tragical page in a history of Leningrad is a period of blockade. In September 1941 armies of the Nazys surrounded the city, trying to cut the arteries of food supply. By the end of war the population of Leningrad incredibly decreased - about 600 thousand of people died of famine, tens thousand were evacuated. Hitler supposed to erase Leningrad from the Earth. Succesfully, it never happened. St.-Petersburg - Leningrad is a sole large European city, on the territory of which the foot of enemy had never come.

The end of June, when the International Students' Games will take place, is a magic period of so called "white nights" in St.-Petersburg. It's as light outside in the night as in the afternoon. The darkness does not come. You can even read anything on the street at night, for example the newspaper "Sport. Day after day".
